Large Mailbox Guidance

GravesMail handles large mailboxes using a two-phase sync approach:

Phase 1 — Quick Start: Your newest 500 messages per folder are fetched first. This typically takes 30–60 seconds and gives you immediate access to your recent email.

Phase 2 — Background Sync: Remaining messages sync quietly while you work. A progress indicator in the status bar shows completion percentage and estimated time remaining.

Tips for large mailboxes:

  • You can work with your email immediately after Phase 1 completes
  • Background sync can be paused and resumed at any time
  • Progress is saved — close the app and it resumes where it left off
  • Consider archiving old email with your current provider before migrating

How to Set Up

Gmail Setup

  1. Go to myaccount.google.com → Security
  2. Enable 2-Step Verification
  3. Go to App Passwords, generate one for “Mail”
  4. In GravesMail: enter your Gmail address and the app password
  5. Server settings auto-detect — just click Test Connection

Yahoo Mail Setup

  1. Go to login.yahoo.com → Account Security
  2. Enable Two-step verification
  3. Generate an app password
  4. In GravesMail: enter your Yahoo address and the app password
  5. Server settings auto-detect — just click Test Connection

Proton Mail Setup

  1. Subscribe to Proton Mail Plus ($4/month) or higher
  2. Download and install Proton Bridge from proton.me/mail/bridge
  3. Start Proton Bridge and sign in
  4. In GravesMail: use the local IMAP settings shown in Proton Bridge (typically 127.0.0.1:1143)
  5. Use the Bridge-generated password, NOT your Proton account password
